Biomass Utilization and the Forest Products Industry in Tennessee
Dr. Adam Taylor of the Forest Products Center at the University of Tennessee has organized and will host a half-day seminar workshop entitled "Biomass Utilization and the Forest Products Industry in Tennessee." The seminar will be offered at the Sheraton Music City Hotel in Nashville, TN on Oct. 1, 2008.
Ongoing legislative and research activity relating to biomass utilization, highlighted by the recent announcement of the bio-ethanol plant in East Tennessee, has stimulated much interest in the topic of biomass among the members of the forest industry in Tennessee.
Currently, the wood products industry is the biggest user of biomass energy in the state. Wood as a biomass source has a number of advantages: forests are abundant and growing in Tennessee, wood can be harvested year-round, and the collection and delivery systems for woody biomass are already in place.
New efforts to expand the use of biomass for energy and products can look to the wood industry for valuable lessons. At the same time, increasing demand for woody biomass raw materials will provide new markets – and new competition- for forest and wood processing residues.
